PURCHASING ORGANIC COTTON MEANS THAT YOU ARE NOT ONLY PROTECTING YOURSELF BUT ALSO YOU HAVE A HAND IN MAKING THE WHOLE WORLD A SAFER PLACE TO LIVE

@@@

“DON’T BLOW IT – GOOD PLANETS ARE HARD TO FIND“

Over the past decade the rise of information about the benefits of organic food has driven a lot of people to buying organic products for their homes. It is no surprise to know that farmers who also dedicate themselves to crops other than food are taking the effects of organic farming very seriously as well. It is reported that cotton crops are the 2nd largest user of agricultural pesticides in the world. Only second to coffee internationally and to corn here in the United States. This means that 25% of the world's insecticides and 10% of the world's pesticides are dedicated to cotton. Even scarier than this is the fact that at least four of the top nine pesticides used in treating this cotton is considered by the EPA to be highly carcinogenic. These are cyanide, dicofol, naled and propargite. The problem is that when the crops are sprayed it is estimated that only 25% of those chemicals actually get absorbed into the plant. The rest is drifting up to miles and settling on crops that we eat and into water that is a drinking source for humans and animals. On top of this, there is also the problem that in time the insects that these chemicals are supposed to repel are becoming immuned to these synthetics. This requires that more be dumped onto the plant in attempt to produce the highest yield possible. So, ironically all of these chemicals are doing nothing more that contaminating the human food chain and the wildlife that is ingesting them. Organic cotton is grown on land that is certified to be free from any pesticide, insecticide and defoliants for at least three years. The farmers maintain their crops using time-old methods of crop rotation, cover crops, beneficial insects and human labor (not to mention organic fertilizers) to care for their plants. This not only assures them safer working conditions but also safer products for those who enjoy them. The solution to the problems conventional cotton farming presents is to support organic practices. For the benefit of the workers. For the benefit for our environment. For the benefit of yourself and your family. I once read that, "you should never put anything on your skin that you would not put in your mouth," with all of these unsettling facts about toxic chemicals, I can definetely see where this person was coming from. e knew. The more we support these farmers by spending money on organically grown cotton, the lower the prices will get and the smaller the human foot print will be on the Earth.

Sketch drawing, Washing unit and Pooja for the Carma Garments Office

Sketch Drawing class
I started the day with a class in sketch drawing, Schweetlau introduced me to a some people at the Instiute of Design which are helping me out and teach me about sketch drawing.

Eco-Friendly Washing Unit
After class Raja, Kayal and Linda took me to the washing unit to show me how they use 100 different washing technics to affect the fabric in different ways.

This is the machine they use to get the latest fashion in denim, with worn out holes and stonewashed look!

All these fabrics are the same, but washed differently.

Pooja at Carma Garment Office today

I have been feeling a bit sick from the extreme high temprature here in South India the past two days, today the temprature was close to + 40 C and this is too hot for me, especially without aircondition A/C. I had to say no thanks to the Pooja invitation that the Carma Team was going to have for the Carma Garments Office, because of this.. Sorry guys, but the next time I'm in! :-)

Creative hands together for a better world

Lunch the Indian way at the office

All Indians have darker ankles which look like bruises because of their buddha positions on the floor. They do most things on the floor, they eat and work on the floor, not that they don't have a desk but they like it that way.

Running around Chennai - September 10. 2009

Today I've been running around the city of Chennai. The day started with my theory lesson in organic design with Schweetlau, she is a very good teacher and I truly enjoyed the privat class with her today. After this I went to the Carma Garments office to meet up with Linda, Kayal and Raja. Hussein kindly took me for a ride to Paris, a crazy part of Chennai to find buttons. It felt just like I was back in Delhi for a short moment. I got to see parts of Chennai I never been to today, another part of the beautiful long beach among all. Thank you for guiding me today Hussein.

I looked like a mess when I came back to the office this evening and Raja insisted to take a photo of me... I felt just as I look on this photo, incredible hair do he he:

1500 km drive and 10 manufactories in 3 days - South India September 6. - 9. 2009

We enjoyed the nature, the animals and the people on our trip. One way by car and the way back to Chennai with the nightbus.

Raja is a good driver, but the Indian trafic is like crazy.... I've never seen anything simular to it in my whole life and I don't know how many times I said "Oh Jesus Krist" on this trip ha ha... Anyway, we got there safe, thank you Raja.. and maybe Jesus too had something to do with it too?! :-))

Bamboo trees which also are jused in organic textile.
Naturally Organic - bamboo is grown without pesticides or fertilisers, unlike conventional cotton which uses 25% of all the worlds’ pesticides less than 10% of the agricultural land mass. Luxuriously soft - bamboo feels like silky cashmere. Sustainable - Moso bamboo is one of the world’s fastest growing plants, growing up to a metre in a day. Bamboo is a grass, so once cut it will regenerate quickly without the need for replanting (in the same way as your garden lawn). It grows very densely and so the yield per acre is excellent in comparison to cotton. Eco-friendly - one of the most positive things about bamboo is that it absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide than equivalent stands of trees. More bamboo would help to cut the globally rising levels of carbon dioxide and help in the fight against global warming. Absorbent - bamboo absorbs up to 60% more water than cotton. This makes it an excellent choice for towels and bathrobes. Breathable - the porous nature of the fibre makes it breathable and extremely comfortable against the skin. Thermo-regulating - keeps the wearer warm in cool weather. Hypoallergenic - bamboo's organic and natural properties make it non-irritating so perfect for extra sensitive skin. You will find high fashion clothing design made of organic bamboo or organic cotton and organic linnen at Carma Shop in Grunerløkka, Oslo www.carmagarments.com

We came across a wedding on our way through a mountain village

Linda Lekven alias "Lindiana Jones"

Our visit to the factories:

Sometimes we have time to eat lunch, but my stomach has a hard time to tolerate the Indian bacteria and spices, so I end up eating a lot of eggs. It will probably grow wings on my back before I come home... he he..

No wonder minimum order is 50 kg fabric pr color, look at this heavy machine they use to color the fabric.

Dyeing process

750 km ride with a nightbus back to Chennai, sleeping in a box ha ha... this was fun!

Good night Linda, Raja and Kayal....

6am on the way back to the hotel in Chennai to rest, a lot of people was already up to do their power walk by the beach
